KFAR strikes back… and wins

First off, my sincere apologies to Ghost and the KFAR crew. I dug up old and incorrect information in my post yesterday, so much for my librarian skills. Ghost left some comments correcting me, which I encourage everyone to read.

Basically, the window to apply for a low power FM license is closed. So that ship has sailed and KFAR must fly a pirate flag to broadcast. And by the way WDVX is not a low power FM station.

It appears as though the deck is stacked against KFAR, they would like to broadcast legally, but they can’t. And I still think the raid was politically motivated, as 100 watts of transmitting power can’t interfere with much. Maybe a mosquito 2 inches from the transmitter is inconvienced.

So I stand corrected and firmly back in KFAR’s corner. Play on, I’ll be listening.

KFAR rallies at Knoxville City Council meeting

The Knoxville News-Sentinel has an article on the KFAR rally at last night’s City Council meeting. While I still respect KFAR’s first amendment/civil disobedience stance, I’ll admit my opinion is shifting away from KFAR’s side of things.

There appear to be ways for KFAR to broadcast legally, and at least one local radio station has done this, WDVX. So if there is a legal way for KFAR to broadcast, why haven’t they explored this option?

More on the KFAR raid and shutdown

The second half of Metropulse’s Citybeat talks about KFAR’s shutdown and how it may have been politically motivated. That makes sense to me, the names on the affidavit as complainants were FBI agents and a TVA agent. And KFAR isn’t exactly establishment media, somebody probably didn’t like what they heard. But why are the TVA and FBI listening to KFAR anyway?

Star Wars

Ok, I’ll admit it, I like Star Wars. Perhaps it’s a bit more than like. I’m not as bad as some people, I’ve never dressed up as a Star Wars character, and I don’t own every Star Wars toy ever made. But I do own a few Star Wars toys, both from the original releases and the nineties special editions. I’ve seen the prequels, and will see Episode III next year, but they don’t have the same magic the original trilogy did.

That’s where I guess I’m a little obsessive. I own 3 different versions of the trilogy on VHS, and just bought the DVD box set. I bought a laserdisc player just so I could watch Star Wars: Trilogy – The Definitive Collection . And I own at least 30 Star Wars books.

Here are a bunch of CNN articles about Star Wars; Five major changes in the ‘Star Wars’ DVD, Why Lucas tinkered with ‘Star Wars’, Mark Hamill answers questions about ‘Star Wars’ DVD and Naked Wookiees and broken R2-D2s.

Tennessee beats Florida 30 to 28

Well we beat Florida last night 30 to 28 in front of a Neyland Stadium record crowd of 109,061. I didn’t watch the first half, I was at the movies watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. But I did see the second half. The fourth quarter was a wild ride. With about 4 minutes left, Erik Ainge throws to Jayson Swain for a touchdown. But then James Wilhoit, a guy that has never missed, kicks wide right and misses the extra point, so the score is 27 to 28.

Then the game gets really wild. Florida is forced to punt with 55 seconds left. We manage to get to mid field, and with 6 seconds to go, Wilhoit redeems himself with an absolutely perfect 50 yard field goal. Wow. We win 30 to 28. The Knoxville News Sentinel has more details, as does ESPN. Now Tennessee is ranked No. 8 and Florida is No. 16 in the USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches Top 25.

And the Colts just beat the Titans 31-17. Being a Tennessean I guess I should be for the the Titans. But being in Knoxville I have to be for Peyton Manning.

Impressions of the new Firefox and Thunderbird versions

After one day of using the new versions of Firefox and Thunderbird, I can say that a fresh install of the basic programs is extremely well polished and nicely done. With any install other than that, there are problems.

First, I’m never quite sure how to upgrade. Do I uninstall the old version and install the new one? Or do I just install over the top of the old version? I had been using the over the top method for earlier releases, but this has lead to listings in Add or Remove Programs that I can’t delete. So this time I used the uninstall/install method and that seemed to work well and preserve my settings. But ideally the installer should do everything for you. Why it doesn’t is beyond me.

My other problem is that installing a new version breaks 95% of the themes and extensions. There needs to be a better system for maintaining them during an upgrade.

That said I’m really liking the new RSS support in Firefox and Thunderbird. I personally think RSS is a better fit for an email/newsgroup program than a web browser, so I’m using RSS feeds in Thunderbird. Strangely, RSS support is not enabled by default in Thunderbird. To add it go to Tools, Account Settings, Add Account and choose RSS News and Blogs.

Once the account is created, click on it, then go to View Settings for this account, and then Manage Subscriptions. There you can add or delete feeds. It’s a bit more complicated than bookmarking feeds in Firefox, but I think of RSS feeds more as newsgroups than bookmarks.
