Now broadcasting from Columbia

Well it’s official, Stephanie and I are now homeowners. We closed on the house Monday and haven’t slowed down since. We’ve been buying furniture, painting, and getting the utilities etc set up. We just got cable TV and Internet around noon (central time) today. You don’t appreciate high speed Internet access until you’ve gone without it for a while. 🙂

Tuesday we are headed to Arkansas for a few days. We’re not flying out of the Columbia airport this time, we already learned that lesson. We’re renting a car and driving to the St. Louis airport, and flying from there to Little Rock. After a couple days there, we’re headed back to Knoxville with Stephanie’s mom to get ready for the wedding.

Well it’s May…

Well it’s May. Stephanie’s birthday was May 4th. Happy 24th birthday Hobbit! 🙂 My final semester at the University of Tennessee is over. All the students in my class did well, I guess I’m a decent teacher after all. I did well in the classes I took too. Time to head to Columbia, Missouri.

I’ll actually be able to drive in Columbia. I finally finished driving training at Patricia neal and the hand controls etc. are being installed next week.

Driving update

The left foot accelerator wasn’t working too well so I tried a new control today, a Menox Hand Control. It’s very nice, you push it forward for the brake and pull back for the gas. Feels natural and easy, the left foot accelerator was just a pain to use and I wasn’t too good at it.

There are plenty of customization options for it, I’ll just have to see what works best for me. I’ll also be getting a steering knob and there are several options for that too.

A new pope

Cardinal Ratzinger – Pope Benedict XVI. Heaven help us. I am not a happy Catholic. Ratzinger is much too conservative for me. After all he was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He’s the guy who went after church dissidents and upheld church policy against attempts for reform. They used to call that the Inquisition you know, and it doesn’t have the best reputation.

I agree with Jurandir Arauj, of the National Conference of Bishops Afro-Brazilian Section who told Reuters: “It seems that he is too conservative. Hopefully the Holy Spirit can help him change. We expected a person like John Paul. Somebody who could give the Church alternatives … open the Church to the world, look more at reality.”

Columbia, Missouri News

Some Columbia news to report. I got an assistantship at SISLT. So I’ll have a job when a get to Columbia, which is very good.

Stephanie and I are flying to Columbia next week to look at houses. Wish us luck.

On the road again

I drove on the road today. No major roads, just some light traffic. I was definately nervous, especially since I haven’t driven in a little over a year and a half. It was like being in drivers ed again. But I made it back in one peice.

Bronchitis

At some point during the trip or even before Stephanie acquired bronchitis. She’s been coughing, vomiting and generally feeling miserable for quite a few days now. She went to the doctor today and got some antibiotics. Hopefully that will get her feeling better.

Road Trip

From the night of Thursday the 17th until yesterday I was traveling. Seven states in seven days. Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. And of course back to Knoxville. We saw a lot of interesting places and collected quite a few road maps.

We went to Arkansas for a bridal shower for Stephanie then decided to go to St. Louis and then Columbia. That meant some backtracking but the whole trip was an exercise in spontaneity. And a really good way to wear yourself out.
